From Interventions to Non-Pharmacological Strategies: Introduction to the Typologies of Health Prevention and Patient Care

Non-pharmacologic interventions, or NPIs, these non-pharmacologic, non-invasive, targeted and evidence-based interventions, are currently experiencing a significant boom in the field of patient care. This boom is due to the following situation: chronic diseases are on the rise and conventional – drug-based - medicine cannot always meet patients’ needs. Non-pharmacological interventions are therefore part of a climate of social change brought about by the multiple crises of the present and are being used by new ways of thinking in care. The aim is to determine the scope of an NPI or NPS (non-pharmacological strategy) in order to question its limitations and potential for patient care through a theoretical and practical definitional approach that draws on the perspectives of researchers and practitioners.

Les interventions non-médicamenteuses, ou INM, ces Interventions non pharmacologiques, non invasives, ciblées et fondées sur des données probantes, connaissent aujourd’hui un essor important dans les parcours de santé des patients. Cet essor répond à la situation suivante : les maladies chroniques se développent de manière considérable et la médecine conventionnelle – médicamenteuse – ne peut pas toujours répondre aux besoins des patients. Les interventions non médicamenteuses s’inscrivent ainsi dans un climat de transformations sociales engendré par les multiples crises contemporaines et se déploient au travers de nouvelles façons de penser le soin. Il s’agit ici d’établir le périmètre d’action de ce qu’est une INM ou une SNM (stratégie non-médicamenteuse) de questionner leurs limites et potentiels de prise en charge patient grâce à une approche définitionnelle, tant théorique que pratique, nourrie de regards de chercheurs et de praticiens.
