AU - Marco Barroca-Paccard AU - Abdelkrim Hasni AU - Kheira Bestaoui AB - Political education is facing current socio-environmental challenges. Scientific school disciplines are thus challenged to integrate the political and ethical dimensions of environmental issues. Drawing on a definition of political education as the development of students’ capacity to analyse power relations, value tensions and the conditions of collective deliberation (Barthès, Sauvé & Torterat, 2022), we implemented a teaching sequence in two First-Year specialized life sciences classes, incorporating an international conference simulation on Arctic protection. The sequence was co-designed with the teachers through a collaborative didactic engineering approach. The results reveal a strong awareness among students regarding the ecological crisis and a less anthropocentric environmental stance. However, the analysis shows that students mainly used anthropocentric arguments, giving significant weight to economic interests. The potential of simulations and the management of differences between the scientific framework and partisan positions are discussed.
